Chapter Twelve

Safety First!

Kimmi and Snappy had a restful night, sleeping in their comfortable beds until the light returned to the sleeping cave. Alleana swam into the cave and woke them up, getting them ready to start another busy day.

“Good morning, sleepyheads!” Alleana called out. “Remember, every morning you have to gather the greens for dinner.”

“Good morning, Alleana,” Kimmi replied sleepily. “We will go in a few minutes. Let me wake up first, okay?”

“Of course, Kimmi, no rush,” Alleana answered. “I wanted to make sure you go to the southern kelp garden today, since we are having unknown creatures visiting the area of the main garden. Is that okay with you? Do you remember how to get there?”

A little more awake, Kimmi took a moment to think before answering.

“Yes, Alleana,” she replied. “We go through the south cave entrance and past the large coral reef on the right. Just past the coral is our southern garden. Is that right?”

“Good job, Kimmi, you are exactly right!” Alleana said with pride, smiling at Kimmi.

Kimmi was glad the daily training she had been receiving was coming back to her. Alleana had been giving Kimmi lessons daily on various topics, how to find the gardens, how to give a mermaid siren, how to tell a friendly fish from one not so friendly, and never to go into open water alone. There were so many things Kimmi would have to remember to be safe in her pod. There was even more to remember now that she was in charge of Snappy’s safety also.

Kimmi smiled back at Alleana, glad Alleana was proud of her. Then she swam over to where Snappy was resting and called to him, “Wake up Snappy! We are going to the south garden today! Time to wake up!” She moved the seaweed around, trying to find him, his camouflage was very effective!

“Good morning, Kimmi and Alleana!” Snappy said as he poked his head out of the seaweed. “I’m ready for another fun day!”

“Let’s hope it won’t be as eventful as yesterday, okay?” Alleana said as she smiled at Snappy, her voice revealing her concern. “You both should hope for a nice quiet day, right?”

“Yes, Alleana,” Kimmi said, a little disappointed they weren’t going to be going on an explore or doing something exciting. She realized, though, to keep her promise to the sea dragons, she had to keep Snappy safe at all costs, even if it meant having boring days gathering kelp together. “We will try to have a nice, quiet day.”

Swimming slowly out of his seaweed bed, Snappy headed toward Kimmi.

“Kimmi, we will still use the kettle, right?” he asked.

“Yes, of course!” Kimmi replied happily. At least it was fun for Snappy. She would make sure he had a fun ride in the kettle on their way to and from the south garden.

“Oh,” Snappy added. “Don’t forget to bring the gathering mat this time!”

“You’re right, Snappy!” Kimmi answered. “I forgot it last time, didn’t I? Well, let’s get it from the dining cave and be on our way! Thanks for reminding me.
